my equipment & research environments

Types Of Equipment
My own equipment which I have used during fieldwork includes a DJI Mini2 drone, to map landscapes in coastal Italy, the Alps, Scottish woodlands, and my upcoming research in the Amazon rainforest towards the end of 2025. I am also keen to supplement my research with photographic evidence, using my Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras.
Geographical
My research interests are primarily with using the latest mapping technologies to contribute new knowledge about the biodiversity of the Amazon Rainforest, and accurately estimating how much carbon these ecosystems hold. Leading up to my PhD, I have used 3D drone mapping to understand tree health and resilience to climate change.
Imaging & Mapping
Through Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, I combine the use of satellite and drone imagery to better understand geographical variations of environmental factors and changes. For example, for my MSc thesis, I drone surveyed the varying conditions of landslide prone regions, to predict future landslide risk, which is useful for local people, policymakers, and future research.

Forests

For my Bachelors dissertation I investigated the impact of climatic and environmental change in Scotland. My findings were applied into the context of improving climate resilience and mitigation in forests.

Mountains

During my final years of my BSc (Hons) Geography degree at Aberdeen University, I took part in a group fieldwork project in the Italian Alps. As a team from different research backgrounds, we recorded plant species and soil samples along the deglaciated area in the shadow of the Pre-De-Bar glacier, in the Aosta Valley, Italy. This allowed us to understand chronosequences of plant succession.

Volcanos

While living in Iceland I was lucky enough to experience the Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption. I visited the eruption several times, including a field excursion with the University of Iceland.

GLACIERS

I lived and studied in Iceland for the first 6 months of 2021. Some of my fieldwork included measuring the ablation rate of a rapidly receding outlet glacier from one of the biggest Ice sheets in Europe.

Underwater

While volunteering in Kenya in 2018 I achieved an open water PADI diving qualification. Using my diving skills I have taken part in coral restoration in East Africa, and explored the Mediterranean marine environment while living in Malta.
